A dental crown is a reliable solution that can last for a decade or longer with the correct care. However, your restoration won’t last forever. If your crown falls off, don’t panic! Here’s what you should do until you see your emergency dentist.
A Lost Crown is a Dental Emergency
A dental crown is a cap that covers a tooth to provide additional protection while restoring its health and function. Although a crown doesn’t damage your tooth, your enamel was reshaped to allow the restoration to fit over it. Therefore, your tooth must always be covered by a crown, or you can be at risk of complications. As a result, losing your crown is a dental emergency. You should not wait to contact a dentist. Crowns can fall off for various reasons, including:
- An improperly fitted crown
- Not enough dental cement
- Eating hard or sticky foods
- Grinding and clenching teeth
- Tooth decay
Handling a Lost Dental Crown
The first thing you need to do is calm down and find your crown. Place it in a container with a lid and bring it with you to your dentist. Next, follow these important steps:
- Rinse Your Mouth: Rinse your mouth with salt water to free any debris. It is also a natural antiseptic to kill bacteria. Salt water will also reduce pain, inflammation, and infections.
- Contact Your Dentist: Contact your dentist and explain the situation. They’ll schedule you for your next availability to rebond or replace your crown.
- Manage Any Pain: Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you’re experiencing any discomfort. Avoid hot or cold foods and drinks to prevent sensitivity.
- Eat Carefully: Choose soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Avoid hard or chewy foods.
- Use Toothpaste: You can use a small dab of toothpaste on your crown to create a temporary seal when placed back over your tooth. This is only meant to be used as a temporary solution. Never use over-the-counter dental cement or glue to hold your crown in place.
- Keep Your Mouth Clean: Now, more than ever, you need to keep your mouth clean. Brush and floss after every meal, in addition to the morning and at night.
