Wisdom tooth extractions are one of the more common types of dental treatments. You might have witnessed friends or family going through the process, and waited with bated breath for fate to decide it was your turn. But the time never came. So what happened? Are you in the clear?
Not necessarily, but possibly. Keep reading for two reasons why your wisdom teeth might not have made an appearance yet.
Possibility #1: They’re Impacted
“Impacted” teeth are pearly whites that want to grow but are stuck below your gumline. Sometimes, they simply get trapped. Other times, as is more often the case with wisdom teeth, your dental lineup is already full, and an existing tooth is blocking the way out.
Usually this causes noticeable discomfort. However, an absence of dental pain doesn’t mean for sure that your wisdom teeth aren’t impacted. You’ll have to double-check with your dentist and ask for an X-ray to know for certain.
Possibility #2: You Don’t Have Wisdom Teeth
Not everyone has wisdom teeth, although professionals aren’t sure why. Lacking one or more wisdom tooth isn’t associated with any medical complications and isn’t an indication of poor oral health. Some professionals theorize that wisdom teeth grow later than other teeth because they once served as replacements for past generations. Since most smiles nowadays are too small to support wisdom teeth, it’s possible that some people’s genetics have simply caught up with the times.
Regardless, you shouldn’t automatically assume this is the case for you. Once again, it’s better to double-check with a dental X-ray!
Why is It Important to Check for Wisdom Teeth?
Confirming your wisdom tooth status with an X-ray is important because if they are impacted, you’ll want them extracted as soon as possible. Even if they’re not physically hurting you, teeth that are hanging out below your gumline can cause infection, dental damage for erupted pearly whites, or cysts.
There are some instances where impacted teeth don’t have to be removed. Depending on the situation, they might be able to grow without causing health problems. However, the only person who can determine that is a dentist! No matter which way you slice it, you should pay your local tooth expert a visit if your wisdom teeth are M.I.A.
